The AM-TW-017 is the most adaptable pad in our entire product line — and I say that as the person who designed the universal head pad and the concave pad specifically to be versatile. The half-circle shape makes it geometrically useful in three different anatomical planes, which is why I regularly see it in ORs being used for applications I never originally spec’d it for. That kind of organic adoption tells you something about a product’s utility. A surgical team in Guangzhou showed me how they use a pair of 017s to support the chest in prone position for anterior-approach lumbar spine surgery — something we’d designed the concave pad for, but they preferred the semi-circle because the curved contact surface matched the thoracic contour better. Another orthopedic surgeon in Singapore uses it to support the contralateral knee during total knee arthroplasty, creating a stable flexion angle without a dedicated knee positioner. That’s the semi-circle: a simple shape that solves positioning problems across the entire body because the geometry makes sense in more than one context.
The basic form is a 50cm-long gel half-cylinder available in three cross-sectional profiles: 10×7cm, 12×10cm, and 15×7cm. The flat base anchors to the OR table surface, and the curved upper face provides the contact surface. In lateral decubitus — the most critical application — the semi-circle positions under the dependent torso at the axillary level, offloading the axilla and preventing brachial plexus compression. The brachial plexus is notoriously vulnerable in lateral positioning because the weight of the upper body can compress the neurovascular bundle against the humeral head; a properly positioned semi-circle transfers that weight to the rib cage instead. In supine procedures, paired semi-circles support the chest wall or the bilateral hips for anterior approach spine cases. In prone, a single semi-circle under each ankle or knee keeps the lower extremities in neutral anatomical alignment without hyperextension. The gel core uses the same mid-durometer polymer formulation as our concave pad (AM-TW-012): firm enough for structural support under body weight, compliant enough to avoid edge loading at the contact interface.
The semi-circle bridges the gap between our dedicated-position pads and a true multi-purpose support. It’s not a replacement for the hip pad (AM-TW-018), which has a contoured relief channel specifically for the greater trochanter. It’s not a replacement for the concave pad (AM-TW-012), which has a deeper, narrower trough for limb cradling with open surgical access above. But if you’re stocking a limited positioning inventory, a pair of 017s gives you lateral torso support, lower-extremity elevation, shoulder and axillary positioning, and chest wall support — all from one SKU in three size options.
