I fly between Shanghai and our distribution hubs in Southeast Asia about six times a year, and I’ve watched too many travelers struggle with full-length canes in airplane aisles and overhead bins to not build a solution. The AM-FS9281L is a four-section collapsible walking stick that folds down to 32 centimeters—smaller than a rolled-up magazine—and deploys into a full 87 cm cane in about five seconds. The sections are connected by an internal elastic cord that pulls each segment into alignment automatically, so there’s no threading parts together and no risk of misaligning the sections. You unfold it, give it a shake to seat the joints, and it’s ready to walk. When you’re done, you press the release button on each joint, fold the sections side by side, and tuck the whole thing into the included nylon travel pouch that clips to the outside of your carry-on.
The sections are 6061 aluminum alloy, 16 mm diameter per segment, with machined aluminum connectors at each joint that create a friction-fit lock. The connectors are designed to handle lateral forces without wobbling—I’ve tested these on cobblestone streets, airport moving walkways, and gravel paths, and the joints stay locked until you deliberately release them. The elastic cord runs through the center of all four sections and is made from marine-grade shock cord rated for tens of thousands of stretch cycles; it won’t lose tension and start sagging after a year of use the way cheap elastic cords do.
The handle is a molded T-grip with a soft rubber cover, comfortable for walking durations up to a few hours. The rubber tip is 19 mm, internally reinforced. Total weight is 390 grams, and packed dimensions are 32 cm by 7 cm by 4 cm in the travel pouch. Weight capacity is 110 kg. The travel pouch is water-resistant nylon with a drawstring closure and a carabiner clip for attaching to luggage.
I built the 9281L primarily for travelers, but the compact folding size also makes it useful for anyone who keeps a cane in their car (it fits in a glove box or door pocket), anyone who wants a backup cane that lives in their bag (it weighs about as much as a water bottle), and anyone who uses a cane intermittently rather than continuously and doesn’t want to carry a full-length stick when they don’t need it. The folding mechanism has been through over five thousand deployment cycles in our testing lab without a single joint failure, which gives me confidence in saying it’ll last the life of the cane under normal use.
